Happy Birthday: Crystal Reed

WILDsound Festival

Born: February 6, 1985 in Detroit, Michigan, USA

I don’t care if people know who I am or if I make a ton of money, I just love my work so much.

I started to be much happier in my relationships when I realized that I can only control myself. That way, you don’t worry about people and don’t waste your time thinking, ‘What if he cheats on me?’ You can’t control that.

[speech at the Republican National Convention, Aug. 17, 1992.] Whatever else history may say about me when I’m gone, I hope it will record that I appealed to your best hopes, not your worst fears; to your confidence rather than your doubts. My dream is that you will travel the road ahead with liberty’s lamp guiding your steps and opportunity’s arm steadying your way.

I know in my heart that man is good, and that what’s right will always – eventually – triumph. And that there’s purpose and worth to each and every life.

Status quo, you know is…

[about being called volatile] What do they say about all the guys that are tremendous actors? Don’t they say they have a volatile temper and emotions? Yeah, sure they do! They’re not saying they like a nice, mild guy. Look at Sean Penn.

[on receiving his first Oscar nomination] People are finally realizing I’m one of the few actors who has never missed a performance. I’ve worked with broken legs, arms, ankles. I once passed a kidney stone during the opening night of a show.

Happy Birthday: François Truffaut (1932–1984)

Born: February 6, 1932 in Paris, France

One looks at films differently when one is a director or a critic. For example, though I have always loved Citizen Kane (1941), I loved it in different ways at different stages of my career. When I saw it as a critic, I particularly admired the way the story is told: the fact that one is rarely permitted to see the person who interviews all the characters, the fact that chronology is not respected, things like that. As a director I cared more about technique: all the scenes are shot in a single take and do not use reverse cutting; in most scenes you hear the soundtrack before you see the corresponding images – that reflects Orson Welles’ radio training, etc. Behaving like the ordinary spectator, one uses a film…

[on cultural differences between the United States and United Kingdom] You know, we’re divided by a common language, even though we’re meant to have been from the same place. There is a definite shift when I get on the plane and I land. It’s very Puritan in America, and it’s a different culture in England and much more European in its belief system. In the United States, it’s quite strict.

I’m a girl’s girl. I love to hang out with boys – I’ve got brothers – but I’m a girl’s girl, in all the ways you can be girlie. Nails and chats and gossip magazines and reality TV and pop culture… Did going to Oxford and reading “Paradise Lost” change that? No.

Happy Birthday: Dane DeHaan

I always thought James Dean was this acting nerd like I am. He was just born with the talent to act and this vivid imagination. But the way he went about getting there was actually kind of annoying.

I like to believe that most human beings go about things with a point of view that they’re just doing what they feel like they need to do at that time. Sometimes people make bad decisions, but it’s not evil.

Comic-book movies are where my childhood fantasies meet my adulthood acting fantasies. I really, truly started acting by playing superheroes in my backyard.

Happy Birthday: Laura Linney

WILDsound Festival

Laura Linney.jpgLaura Linney

Born: February 5, 1964 in New York City, New York, USA

With big, emotional roles it’s very easy, especially if you’ve grown up in the American school of acting, to exploit your own pain. You have to be careful about that, because 9 times out of 10, your pain is not appropriate to the character. You can watch someone on-stage cry and cry – but in the audience you feel nothing. It’s easy to become indulgent. For me, what’s important is the story first.

A lifetime of work, particularly where you get to see an actor grow and change, is better than becoming a rock & roll movie star.

[on how she has benefited from receiving Oscar nominations]: It’s helped me to keep working, quite frankly.

When my first movie, Fast Times at Ridgemont High (1982), turned out to be this big hit, I was so innocent, I thought: all movies are hits. It took a couple of years to figure out that almost every movie I made after that didn’t make money. Some of them haven’t made money because they’re not very good movies. It’s not like I look at a project and go, ‘Oh, this is going to be a box-office bomb. I want it!’

I love watching Jeff Bridges act. He’s brilliant.

Part of the fun of life is interacting with people and not knowing what the truth is inside. Letting them reveal that to you is what binds you to people.

I think parenthood is a wonderful balancing act. On the one hand, you want to spend as much time with your children as possible. On the other hand, you want to set an example for them to see that you’re fulfilled in your life and in your work.

Happy Birthday: Tony Jaa

WILDsound Festival

Tony Jaa.jpgTony Jaa

Born: February 5, 1976 in Surin, Thailand

Jackie Chan, Jet Li and Bruce Lee are my masters; they’re the inspiration for my work. Bruce Lee was a heavy fighter who threw hard punches. Jackie moves very fast and uses a lot of comedy, and Jet Li is very fluid. I’ve tried to combine all of their styles and added some things of my own.

I want a strong foundation in Thailand. Hollywood? Maybe in the future.

What they [Chan, Lee and Li] did was so beautiful, so heroic that I wanted to do it too. I practiced until I could do the move exactly as I had seen the masters do it.

I have never made fun of religion. Religion is something I don’t even want to mess with, because I am really afraid of the clouds opening up and my being struck by lightning. Satanism is something else I don’t mess with. I think that the heavy metal bands that do are playing with fire. I have never influenced people in a negative way, and I’m not about to start now.

The hippies wanted peace and love. We [the original Alice Cooper band] wanted Ferraris, blondes and switchblades.
